Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is set to take a major step towards becoming Nigeria’s leading technology and innovation hub following Moniepoint’s commitment to establish a state-of-the-art Innovation Hub within the institution.
The development marks another milestone in the university’s drive to position itself as a centre for research, innovation and technology-driven enterprise.
A high-powered delegation from Moniepoint, comprising senior executives, architects, structural engineers and technical personnel, visited the university on Thursday, 31st of July, to inspect the site allocated for the project.
The proposed facility will be located within the university’s growing technology district, close to the ICT Centre, the African Centre of Excellence (ACE) Building and the recently commissioned National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Innovation Hub.
Leading the inspection were the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor G.A. Aderonmu, who took the delegation through the proposed site and outlined the university’s long-term vision for creating a technology ecosystem comparable to leading innovation clusters around the world.
Sources familiar with the project disclosed that although Moniepoint is developing similar innovation hubs across the country, OAU has been designated as the company’s flagship institution because of its strong reputation for producing highly skilled graduates and driving research excellence.
The company is expected to submit three architectural designs for the project within one month. The proposed facility is also expected to include an underground parking system an innovation that could be the first of its kind within a Nigerian university technology hub.
Professor Bamire stressed the need for timely execution of the project, expressing his desire for the Innovation Hub to be commissioned alongside the university’s proposed PBAT Building.
”I want the Moniepoint Innovation Hub commissioned at the same time as the PBAT Building,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
”We are not building for today; we are building for the next 50 years. These projects must stand together as symbols of excellence and innovation.”
The PBAT Building, together with the Moniepoint Innovation Hub, is expected to form the nucleus of the university’s emerging technology and innovation district.
Also speaking, Professor Aderonmu emphasised that quality would not be compromised in the execution of the project.
”The finishing must be excellent. This building must stand the test of time and meet international standards. We are positioning OAU to attract students and researchers from across Africa and beyond,” he said.
Beyond the Innovation Hub, the university’s innovation ecosystem is expected to receive another boost with the proposed construction of the CBC Scholars Lodge, a 50-room accommodation facility for international scholars and visiting researchers.
The proposed lodge will feature uninterrupted power supply, fibre-optic internet connectivity, smart rooms, co-working spaces, a gymnasium and biometric security systems.
Its proximity to the Moniepoint Innovation Hub is expected to create an integrated ecosystem where researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and technology experts can live and work within the same environment.
Sources within the university also disclosed that the proposed Department of Aeronautical Engineering will be located within the same technology corridor.
The long-term master plan, according to officials, includes the development of aviation infrastructure, including a presidential helipad or a mini airstrip, to facilitate easier access for visiting heads of government, international partners and other dignitaries during major university events.
The Moniepoint partnership is the latest in a series of initiatives undertaken by the Bamire administration to reposition OAU as a globally competitive institution.
Recent interventions include the commissioning of the NITDA Innovation Hub, the revitalisation of the African Centre of Excellence complex, expansion of public-private partnerships, installation of solar-powered streetlights, digitalisation of library resources and ongoing hostel rehabilitation projects.
A senior academic who witnessed the inspection described the project as a significant milestone in the university’s transformation agenda.
”This is how world-class universities are built. They leverage partnerships, attract private investment and create an environment that supports innovation. Moniepoint’s decision to invest in OAU reflects growing confidence in the university’s direction,” the source said.
With architectural designs expected within the next 30 days, the proposed Innovation Hub is poised to become one of the most significant technology infrastructure projects in any Nigerian university, further strengthening OAU’s ambition to emerge as a leading innovation and entrepreneurship destination on the African continent.
