World PR Day: Celebrating the Architect of Great Ife’s Public Image

‎On a day the world pauses to honour the noble craft of Public Relations, one name rises naturally from the heart of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife: Mr. Abiodun Olaoye Olarewaju, FNIPR the calm, disciplined, and distinguished communications professional whose voice has carried the story of Great Ife through seasons of triumph, transition, and transformation.

At Obafemi Awolowo University, that bridge has, for nearly two decades, carried the name and imprint of Mr. Olarewaju.

‎Characteristically, even as the world celebrates PR professionals, he remains focused not on himself but on promoting excellence. At the centre of his attention is the 2026 OAU Academic and Research Excellence Awards a flagship programme celebrating scholarship, innovation, the OAU Stars initiative, and distinguished public servant, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, CFR. The programme features the July 15 awards ceremony, recognition of outstanding students across faculties and levels, and the OAU Research Fair on July 16. Perhaps nothing captures his professional philosophy better than this: while many wait to be celebrated, he remains committed to celebrating excellence in others.

‎Long before he became one of Nigeria’s most respected university public relations practitioners, Mr. Olarewaju had demonstrated an uncommon appreciation for communication as a tool for institution-building. An alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, he graduated in 1990 and began his professional journey in public relations in 1993 after completing his master’s degree. His appointment as the University’s Public Relations Officer in 2006 marked the beginning of an era synonymous with professionalism, institutional stability, and strategic communication.

‎His career trajectory from Public Relations Officer to Head of Press, Protocol and Public Relations, and ultimately Deputy Registrar and Head of Public Relations reflects not merely longevity but sustained excellence. It is a journey defined by discipline, loyalty, and an intimate understanding of the institution he has faithfully served. For more than three decades, he has practised public relations not as a profession of publicity but as a vocation rooted in integrity, responsibility, and service. At Great Ife, he has become much more than the University’s spokesperson. He is the custodian of its public voice, a guardian of its reputation, a chronicler of its defining moments, and one of the most recognisable symbols of its institutional identity.

It is found in communicating difficult decisions with empathy and clarity. It is found in preserving institutional credibility during moments of uncertainty. Throughout his stewardship, Mr. Olarewaju has consistently embodied these qualities. Within the University community, parents seeking reassurance, students searching for clarity, alumni maintaining emotional ties with their alma mater, and journalists requiring accurate information have all come to recognise his office as a dependable source of truth. His communication has remained measured, factual, and reassuring qualities increasingly rare in an era dominated by sensationalism and instant opinion.

Years ago, he was conferred with the professional fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), one of the highest recognitions in the field. Earlier, he was honoured as the Most Influential Public Relations Professional of the Year at the 2024 Osun Public Relations Industry Awards, a testament to his innovative approach and enduring influence on the communications profession. Yet awards are only the visible part of the story. The deeper achievement is the daily discipline showing up when nobody applauds, choosing professionalism when emotion is easier, and understanding that reputation is built line by line, statement by statement, action by action.

‎His leadership of public communication surrounding the 2026 Academic and Research Excellence Awards is therefore symbolic. Beyond managing another institutional event, he is helping to project a narrative of scholarship, mentorship, and intellectual excellence at a time when Nigerian universities must continually reaffirm their relevance within a rapidly changing global knowledge economy.
